Economic assessment based on scenario analysis for the production of a new functional pasta
2018
Abstract Nowadays functional foods are becoming more popular due to their capacity to prevent and/or reduce the risk of certain diseases. Functional foods improve health and give physiological benefits providing nutrients beyond the simple nutritional value. The market for functional foods is growing rapidly and the consumers are willing to pay a premium price for these products. In this context, the production of pasta comprising Opuntia may represent an opportunity to combine the widespread consumption of pasta in the traditional Mediterranean Diet and the beneficial characteristics of the Opuntia, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antimicrobial and neuroprotective p…
Selection of a Sustainable Functional Pasta Enriched with Opuntia Using ELECTRE III Methodology
2017
In the last decade, the nutritional and health benefits of Opuntia (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill.) were discussed by academic scientists and private companies. In particular, the introduction of this substance in frequently consumed foods, like, for example, pasta and bakery products, could have a wide diffusion due to its rich composition in polyphenols, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and amino acids. The identified natural cactus compounds are responsible for biologically relevant activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antimicrobial, and neuro-protective properties. The aim of this paper is the evaluation of the best combination of Opuntia quantity an…
The Production of Industrial Cow’s Milk Curds
2016
By the historical viewpoint, cheeses are the final product of a complex work starting from milk. This liquid substance has to be coagulated: as a result, a heterogeneous matter—curd—is precipitated from the original milk. The rough composition of this intermediate influences the chemical composition of the final cheese. For these reasons, the production of industrial curds should be studied with attention. Different systems are available at present, but the mail process concerns always the coagulation of the original milk and the production of readily available curds for immediate or subsequent use (near the same cheesemaker or in different locations). This chapter discusses the normal produ…
Sistema de monitorización en continuo a tiempo real de la concentración de oxígeno durante el batido para la producción de aceite de oliva virgen
2012
During the mechanical extraction process of Virgin Olive Oil (VOO) some important physical phenomena and enzymatic transformations occur which influence the quality of the final product. The control of process parameters is crucial to ensure the quality of VOO, therefore process monitoring and control is a fundamental requirement in the modern VOO processing industry. The present work proposes an innovative Real-Time Monitoring System (RTMS) aimed at continuously measuring the oxygen concentration during the malaxation process in order to establish a correlation with the quality of the final product obtained. This monitoring system is based on an oxygen concentration sensor directly connect…
Dynamic Simulation of Worm Gears Using CAD Applications
2021
The new processes by plastic deformation of the gears eliminate some of the shortcomings of the old methods of their manufacture, at the same time reducing the production costs and the time of realization of the mass production. To carry out this research, the AutoDesk INVENTOR PROFESSIONAL application was chosen. A worm gear was designed, after which the calculations for the worm and worm wheel were performed. Of particular importance for gear, mechanisms are the research of dynamic loads. The use of modern calculation methods, which have wide possibilities for rapid optimization of prototypes, ensures the minimization or sometimes even exclusion of the execution of experimental samples. T…
Wiper Tools in Turning Finishing of Quenched Steel
2005
In the last years, the research on metal machining has been focused on the development of tools that can support an increment of the cutting parameters instead of the increment of tool life; this strategy is focused to obtain a relevant productivity increment without getting worse the final product quality. The new design of the tool corner radius has allowed preserving the same product quality due to the “wiper effect” generated during the cut. The employ of such re-designed tools can allow substantial productivity improvements and, by employing the same feedrate, it is possible to achieve excellent surface finish and eliminate the grinding operation. With the aim to verify the possibility…
Sustainability evaluation of Sicily's lemon and orange production: An energy, economic and environmental analysis
2013
The island of Sicily has a long standing tradition in citrus growing. We evaluated the sustainability of orange and lemon orchards, under organic and conventional farming, using an energy, environmental and economic analysis of the whole production cycle by using a life cycle assessment approach. These orchard systems differ only in terms of a few of the inputs used and the duration of the various agricultural operations. The quantity of energy consumption in the production cycle was calculated by multiplying the quantity of inputs used by the energy conversion factors drawn from the literature. The production costs were calculated considering all internal costs, including equipment, materi…
Assessment of methodologies and data used to calculate desalination costs
2017
Abstract In desalination, similarly with other industries, the cost of the final product is one of the most important criteria that define the commercial success of a specific technology. Therefore, when new projects are planned or new technologies are proposed, the analysis of the expected costs attracts a lot of attention and is compared to (perceived) costs of state-of-the-art desalination or costs of alternative fresh water supply options. This comparison only makes sense if the cost assessment methodologies are based on the same principles and use common assumptions. This paper assesses: (i) the methodologies used to calculate the water cost; (ii) the boundary conditions and (iii) the …
Definition of a laboratory optimization protocol for road bitumen improved with recycled tire rubber
2012
Abstract Bearing in mind the need to answer one of the most frequent needs for civil construction, in general, and major project such as road infrastructures in particular, this paper presents the results of a laboratory experimental study in order to evaluate the performance improvement that is possible to achieve when modifying road bitumen with CRM (Crumb Rubber Modifier) from discarded tire rubber (TR), using a Wet Process. The environmental advantage is double, since the aim of the research is to obtain high performance road bitumen thanks to the re-use of a discarded material, such as the rubber tires, which otherwise would be dumped in scrap-yard. In particular, this experimental stu…
Systemic analysis of the caulking assembly process
2017
The present paper highlights the importance of a caulking process which is nowadays less studied in comparison with the growing of its usage in the automotive industry. Due to the fact that the caulking operation is used in domains with high importance such as shock absorbers and brake systems there comes the demand of this paper to detail the parameters which characterize the process, viewed as input data and output data, and the requirements asked for the final product. The paper presents the actual measurement methods used for analysis the performance of the caulking assembly. All this parameters leads to an analysis algorithm of performance established for the caulking process which it …
